Struggling to Build a Crunchy, Cohesive Kibble Without Grains?

Dry kibble is the backbone of the pet food aisle, but formulating it without wheat, corn, or synthetic binders can be a challenge. You need structure, crunch, and digestibility, all while keeping your label clean.

Common Challenges:

  • Preventing crumbling post-extrusion
  • Managing calorie density and digestive health
  • Avoiding allergens and synthetic binders
  • Achieving crunch and cohesion in grain-free recipes

PURIS Ingredient Solutions:

  • Pea Starch: A clean-label binder that delivers firm, crunchy texture and excellent expansion, no gluten, no grains, no compromise. Works in “All Natural” pet food lines.
  • Pea Hull Fiber: Adds insoluble fiber for digestive health and calorie dilution, supporting weight management and stool quality.
  • Whole Peas & Pea By Products: Nutrient-dense, label-friendly ingredients that contribute starch, protein, and fiber in one. Contain essential amino acids and are rich in arginine and lysine, which are essential for cats.
  • Pea Protein: Increases protein content with a fine particle size that can support consistent incorporation into dry blends and extruded kibble systems.

Need a Clean-Label Way to Stabilize Wet Foods?

Wet pet foods are all about texture and appearance—but traditional thickeners like carrageenan or modified starches are falling out of favor. You need a natural way to bind, gel, and stabilize your formulas.

Common Challenges:

  • Preventing water separation (syneresis) post-retort
  • Maintaining clean labels and allergen-free formulations
  • Creating stable loaf or gravy textures without synthetic gums

PURIS Ingredient Solutions:

  • Pea Hull Fiber: Adds fiber for digestive health and helps stabilize moisture in high-meat or high-fat formulas.
  • Whole Peas & Pea By Products: Nutrient-dense, label-friendly ingredients that contribute starch, protein, and fiber in one. Contain essential amino acids and are rich in arginine and lysine, which are essential for cats.
  • Pea Starches: Forms strong, retort-stable gels for cohesive loafs and glossy gravies, no gums required.
  • Pea Protein: Supports protein targets and contributes to structured formulations when used alongside existing starch and fiber matrices.

Trying to Hold Fresh Pet Food Together Without High Heat or Gums?

Fresh and refrigerated pet foods are booming—but they come with unique formulation hurdles. Without extrusion or retort, how do you bind high-moisture, high-meat formulas and keep them moist, sliceable, and stable?

Common Challenges:

  • Preventing water separation in refrigerated or frozen formats
  • Maintaining structure and moisture over shelf life
  • Avoiding animal-based binders and synthetic gums
  • Binding without high-heat processing

PURIS Ingredient Solutions:

  • Pea Starch: Adds firmness and structure during gentle cooking, replacing wheat or potato starch.
  • Pea Hull Fiber: Supports calorie control and digestive health in fresh diets, especially for senior or weight-conscious pets.
  • Whole Peas & Pea By Products: Nutrient-dense, label-friendly ingredients that contribute starch, protein, and fiber in one.
  • Internal Pea Fiber: Binds and stabilizes fresh pet food rolls and patties, even at low temperatures—ideal for fresh or raw diets.
  • Pea Protein: Raise protein content with a label friendly pea protein with a fine particle size that supports consistent distribution in blends.

Looking for Better Texture and Function in Treats and Chews?

Pet treats are more than indulgence—they’re tools for training, dental health, and bonding. But formulating treats that are both functional and fun can be tricky.

Common Challenges:

  • Achieving the right crunch or chew without grains or synthetic binders
  • Creating low-calorie, high-fiber treats that pets love
  • Maintaining shape and shelf stability in baked or extruded formats

PURIS Ingredient Solutions:

  • Pea Starch: Provides structure and moldability for crunchy biscuits and chewy dental treats—ideal for grain-free and high-meat formats
  • Pea Hull Fiber: Adds bulk without calories, supports satiety, and improves chew time and dental cleaning action.
  • Whole Peas & Pea By Products: Nutrient-dense, label-friendly ingredients that contribute starch, protein, and fiber in one.
  • Internal Pea Fiber: Keeps soft treats moist and pliable, replacing gelatin or glycerin in semi-moist formats.
  • Pea Protein: Protein Fines offer a straightforward way to raise protein content using a pea-derived ingredient with fine particle size to support even distribution.

Pet Food FAQ

Why are peas used in pet food?

Pulses like peas provide plant based protein, complex carbs, and fiber. They're non-GMO, gluten free, easy to digest, and help create clean label formulas. Peas also offer functional benefits such as kibble structure and digestive support.

Do grain-free or pulse-rich diets cause DCM?

No proven link. The FDA found no causation between grain-free diets and DCM. DCM is multi-factorial. Balanced nutrition (including taurine) matters most.

Are pea and lentil ingredients digestible for pets?

Yes. Properly processed pea starch and protein are highly digestible. Pea fiber supports firm stools without causing gas.

Can pets be allergic to peas?

It's rare. Peas are far less allergenic than common proteins like beef or wheat. They’re naturally gluten-free and soy-free.

Are pea ingredients clean-label and natural?

Yes. PURIS pea ingredients are natural, simple, and minimally processed. They replace artificial binders and support Non-GMO and Organic claims.
